Overview
Overlooking the Foglia valley from the top of a rocky spur, the village of Auditore has experienced a history that emerges powerfully in its architecture and in the tale the area tells of itself. In the late Middle Ages, Auditore passed from the direct dominion of the Malatesta family of Rimini to the Ridolfi counts, delegates of the city of Rimini, after which the village became a fief of the Montefeltro family. The village is still surrounded by the intact defensive walls and the historic centre retains some corner bastions and a 15th-century hexagonal civic tower. Then, in 1944, part of its territory was included by the Germans in the 'Gothic Line', a defensive front aimed at hindering the advance of the Anglo-American allies: today, the Casinina locality houses the Gothic Line Historical Museum, the first and most important museum like that in central Italy.
