Overview
The majestic Town Hall with the Fanzago Clock, built in 1008, is a typical example of medieval architecture, which is reflected in its two-storey structure. The first floor has six arches supported by semi-pillars, while the second has a high tower and few windows. Externally, the walls are frescoed with the coats of arms of the families who once ruled the city. On the wall overlooking the square we see the remains of a walled Gothic loggia, perhaps a balcony from which the "Podestà" or magistrates would make their proclamations. Under the loggia, a well-preserved fresco depicts the Madonna and Child and Saints Sigismund and Christopher. St Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, wished a safe return for the city's merchants and visitors.
