For its thirteenth edition, the Concerto per Milano by the Filarmonica della Scala returns with a new feature: Piazza Duomo is transformed into a large auditorium under the stars with 5,000 seats available to the public free of charge upon reservation, and the stage moves to the front of the Cathedral, which becomes the evocative setting for the evening. As usual, the Philharmonic will be conducted by Principal Conductor Riccardo Chailly. Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino, aka Cateen, as he is known to his 2.2 million followers on social media, makes his debut: at just 30 years old, he is already a global star and an ambassador for a new approach to music.
In the programme, the great music of the twentieth century tells a story: from the Russian opera with the young Sergei Rachmaninov of Aleko to the American musical with the symphonic dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, distant sound worlds follow a single expressive arc. At the centre is George Gershwin's Concerto in F major for Piano and Orchestra, a masterpiece that blends symphonic language and jazz, alongside the curious music that Dmitri Shostakovich wrote for the animated film The Story of the Priest and His Workman Balda, based on a fairy tale by Pushkin.
