Overview

Located on the left bank of the river Trebbia, it is said to have been built in the 13th century, when the Malaspina family built a castle there, of which there are no traces now. It was probably the first settlement in the province of Genoa along the road from Piacenza to the Ligurian capital. After passing to the Genoese Centurione family, who built the palace of the same name there, the town took on the configuration, unique in the valley, of a fortified village. Although part of the walls were demolished in the early 20th century, the fortified village layout is still visible from above, with a lookout tower and various access gates. The Centurione Palace was built in the 17th century with a black and white striped façade. The parish church of St Catherine dates back to 1630 and has 15th-century confessionals. The aforementioned hamlet is also part of the Antola Regional Natural Park: one of the most enchanting areas of the Apennines and the Ligurian hinterland, thanks to the extraordinary panorama of the 1600 m Mount Antola and the activities of the nearby Brugneto Lake.
