Punta Manara

Overview

A valuable promontory for walking enthusiasts

A triangular promontory stretching towards the Gulf of Tigullio, between Sestri Levante and Riva Trigoso. This is Punta Manara, with its spectacular view that extends from Portofino to Punta Mesco and which is one of the most popular hiking destinations. With breathtaking views of the coast, Punta Manara reaches its highest point at Monte Castello, the only peak in the area named after the remains of an ancient fortress.

Built by the Republic of Genoa in the 12th century, this castle is overlaid with a more recent ruin, used both by the Territorial Militia and by the Germans during World War II. Here is the most popular spot on the promontory, Telegrafo, the southern end of the spur of Monte Castello, with a panoramic view as far as Corsica and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Punta Manara can only be reached on foot, along a choice of numerous trails, such as the one that starts in the historic centre of Sestri Levante and continues into the Ligurian shrub. At the end of this 3-kilometre walk, you'll come to Bivacco Manara, a refreshment area with picnic tables in the shade, and steps leading to the top of the promontory, where you can admire the ruins of an old Saracen watchtower.
