Piazza della Trinità

Piazza della Trinità in Viterbo: the frescoed cloister and sacred shrine

In the heart of the historic centre of Viterbo, Piazza della Trinità owes its name to the Church of Santissima Trinità (Most Holy Trinity). Most locals call it the Sanctuary of the Madonna Liberatrice (Our Lady of Liberation). The church, first documented in 1237, was consecrated by Pope Alexander IV in 1258, and was rebuilt in a Baroque-Neoclassical style in the 18th century. Before entering, one can see the ceramic sacred shrine (aedicule) overlooking the square, featuring a Madonna and Child.

The cloister

The portal to the right of the façade leads to the Renaissance cloister. The walls are covered with scenes from the life of St Augustine, painted in frescoes between the late 16th and early 17th century. It is one of the most interesting Renaissance cloisters in the Upper Lazio region.
