House of St Rose Museum in Viterbo: the medieval monastery

In the historic centre of Viterbo, the Monastery of Santa Rosa was founded by Pope Innocent III to house a group of Viterbo women living in observance of Franciscan rules. Located along the Via Francigena, it immediately became a transit point for pilgrims travelling to Rome. Since 1253, it has housed the incorrupt body of Santa Rosa, the patron saint of the city, born in 1233 and died at about 18 years of age.

What is preserved in the complex

The saint's house and the church display sacred vestments, chalices, reliquaries, and numerous ex-voto offerings painted on canvas or tablets, or in the form of sketches, recounting episodes from Rose's life. An exhibition area dedicated to the cult of the saint is currently being prepared.
