The Etruscan-Roman Civic Museum: The Warrior Avle and the Bronze Fans on Lake Bracciano

On the ground floor of Trevignano Romano Town Hall, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, three rooms display the funerary goods from three Etruscan tombs discovered between 1965 and the late 1980s in the necropolises of Olivetello and Rigostano. The period in question ranges from the 8th to the 6th century BC — a precise timespan. And the finds are extraordinary.

The Flabella and the Annesi Piacentini Tomb

The Tomb of Flabella yielded the bronze fans that give the museum its name: extremely thin sheets, a few tenths of a millimetre, worked in repoussé with a technique that still amazes scholars today. From the same tomb come the remains of a chariot and a carriage with hub, wheels and bronze hooks. The Annesi Piacentini tomb — a dromos tomb with two burial chambers — brought forth gold jewellery with agate scarabs, Baltic amber beads, fragments of mineralised fabrics attached to the bronzes and cheese graters used to flavour wine.

The Warrior Avle

The most remarkable room houses the Warrior's tomb, from the 8th century BC: the body laid in its block of earth, still only partially excavated, with grave goods of dagger, shield, fibulae, razor and what appears to be a sceptre — probably a staff of authority. They affectionately call him Avle. The museum organises experimental archaeology workshops, which are open to families and adults.
