Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Terracina: The portal created by the sculptor from Piperno
The Church of Madonna dell'Annunziata is located in Via Annunziata in Terracina. Dating back to the 13th century, it served as the parish church for the settlement outside Porta Albina—the suburb that developed beyond the town’s medieval walls. Damaged by aerial bombings during the Second World War, it was subsequently restored, at least partially.
The portal
The church’s most significant feature is the lunette portal: the architrave, supported by brackets, is decorated in relief with vine tendrils and grape clusters, a Christian symbol associated with rebirth. The portal bears the signature of its creator: A(n)dreas de Piperno, a sculptor originally from Piperno (modern-day Priverno), active in the Pontine region during the Middle Ages. The church bell is currently preserved in the Civic Museum of Terracina.
