Torre Antonelli

Torre Antonelli in Sonnino: the tower that was once taller

Torre Antonelli dominates the historic centre of Sonnino, in the province of Latina. Massive and circular, the tower is all that remains of the feudal castle, probably built around the 9th century by the Domini (Lords) of Sonnino.

The tower that lost its battlements and a few metres in height

The tower was not a standalone structure. It formed part of a system of watchtowers controlling the territory, and was built together with the castle. Then, around the 14th century, the Colonna family remodelled the castle, before passing it on to the Antonelli family, after which the tower is named. They remained the owner until the 19th century. In their last intervention, the Antonelli demolished part of the tower due to safety concerns. The salvaged material was used to build Palazzo Antonelli.

Four levels and cisterns underground

Today, the tower, approximately 24 metres tall, is on four levels connected by internal staircases. The basement rooms house the cisterns. Little remains of the original castle: the perimeter walls and a few decorated rooms. The rest has been lost over time.
