Porta Romana

Porta Romana in Ronciglione: the Farnese gateway to the Tuscia village

Porta Romana marks the boundary between Ronciglione's historic centre and the southern part of the town. Built in 1618 by order of Duke Odoardo Farnese and designed by Vignola, it still stands four centuries later — a Farnese arch in the Viterbo area of Tuscia that works exactly as it always has: the gateway to the village.

How it has changed over time

The gate we see today is not one Ronciglione's residents would have seen in the 19th century. In 1857 someone decided to add a small clock tower on top. It stayed there for nearly 100 years, then in 1954 it was removed, being too heavy for the structure, and the goal was to restore the gate to its original appearance. During the same renovation, the two pedestrian passageways on either side were opened up — where there had previously been two niches.

Practical information

Porta Romana is accessible by paved road, on foot or by bike.
