Church of the Holy Cross in Monterosi: the Baroque cathedral commissioned by Cardinal Altieri
The Church of the Santa Croce is the parish church of Monterosi, a small village in the Tuscia area. It was built from the ground up by Cardinal Lorenzo Altieri, commendatory abbot of Tre Fontane, the works being completed in 1725. It is a Baroque space in a 17th-century style with a bell gable on the left side.
A single nave leading straight to the apse
There are no side aisles inside. The interior is a single nave that opens into a wide apse housing the high altar dedicated to the Holy Crucifix. The oil painting there dates from the early 1700s, and is attributed to the artist Pietro Pozzi.
The side altars
On either side of the high altar stand two side altars. The one on the right is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, with a canvas attributed to the otherwise unidentified "Croccolini painter", the one on the left to the patron Saints Vincent and Anastasius, painted by Giacomo Triga. Both canvases date from the early 1700s.
Relics and a triptych from 1612
The church holds the relics of Saints Vincent and Anastasius, patrons of the town, and a finely crafted silver staurotheca containing a relic of the Holy Cross. Also noteworthy is the wooden triptych of the Holy Saviour, dated 1612, from the Viterbo school, kept inside a glass case.
