Church of Our Lady of Graces in Montefiascone: a container guarding a 14th-century treasure
Along the road that leads from Montefiascone to Orvieto, behind the simple and modern exterior of the church is the Church of Madonna delle Grazie. This building, in its current 20th-century form, is a container built up over the centuries to preserve a far more ancient treasure: a wonderfully tender image of the Virgin Mary dating from the 1300s.
An altar for the Virgin
Upon entering, the eye is immediately drawn to the high altar, in full Baroque style — rich and ornate, designed to provide a worthy setting for the true heart of the sanctuary. At its centre, set like a jewel, is the 14th-century image of the Madonna and Child, the object of centuries of devotion. It is to protect and honour this image that the church was founded in the Middle Ages, and has continued to live on through the centuries.
Take a pause outside the gates
The history of this place is one of continuous rebuilding, a testament to the community's tenacity in preserving its own cherished symbol. Its position outside the historic centre made it a vital stopping point for travellers and pilgrims seeking protection along the road. A tradition that lives on today for all those in search of a moment of peace.
The church is located in the municipality of Montefiascone (VT), on Regional Road no. 2 (Via Cassia) in the direction of Orvieto. Being situated outside the old town, parking space is usually available, making a stop there quick and easy.
