Cathedral of St Peter Apostle in Minturno: Roman columns and Cosmati mosaics in the medieval village
The Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo stands in the heart of the medieval village of Minturno, in the province of Latina. Built with spolia (salvaged materials) from the ruins of ancient Minturnae, the building nicely blends different centuries and styles.
A bell tower embedded in the portico
The first thing that strikes you is the façade. A wide stone-block staircase leads to the portico with pointed arches, into which the 13th-century Gothic bell tower is directly set.
What to see inside
Inside, the structure is divided into three naves, separated by columns and ogival arches. The pulpit is decorated with Cosmati mosaics, and rests on 8th-century columns. In the right nave the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is a concentrated display of Baroque art: polychrome marbles, gilded stuccoes, a marble altar, and a painting of the Last Supper. Beneath the Chapel of San Filippo Neri (St Philip Neri), a 14th-century crypt opens up, containing small rectangular funerary cells.
