St Peter’s Church in Fondi: where an antipope was elected, and the Western Schism began
In the historic centre of Fondi, right next to Palazzo Caetani, stands the Church of San Pietro. This is no ordinary church. It is the former cathedral, and above all the place where, in 1378, an episode occurred that split Christendom in two: the election of Antipope Clement VII. An event that gave rise to the Great Western Schism - decided right here, within these very walls.
A throne and a tomb, history in the making
The façade has a distinctive sail-shaped design, symbolising a ship. Inside, the episcopal throne in Cosmati style catches the eye. It may look like a simple piece of furnishing, yet it was here that Count Onorato Caetani ensured that the Pope of his choice was elected. It is not the only treasure linked to this powerful family. In the side chapel, known as the "Chapel of the Count" or of the Cross, stands the imposing Caetani mausoleum, a funerary monument supported by three elegant female figures that appear almost to lean against the sepulchral ark.
Two masterpieces
The same chapel houses two precious panel paintings. The first is an Enthroned Madonna (Maestà) by Antoniazzo Romano. But the more intriguing work is the Annunciation by Cristoforo Scacco. Look closely at the saint on the left. It is St Honoratus, holding in his hand a small model of the Castle of Fondi - offering us a precise image of what it looked like at the end of the 15th century.
