Viale Colasanti in Bolsena: a walk beneath monumental plane trees toward the lake
In Bolsena, a historic road connects the town centre to the lake. Viale Colasanti is a tree-lined avenue half a kilometre long, where dozens of monumental plane trees cast a welcome shade, guiding your stroll all the way to the shores of Lake Bolsena. Built in the second half of the 19th century, this avenue is not simply a road — it is a true protected natural monument.
A gallery of green giants
Viale Colasanti is lined with seventy trees, sixty-six of which are plane trees and four horse chestnuts. These are no ordinary trees. Fourteen of these plane trees are so imposing - with trunks exceeding four metres in diameter - that they have been included in the official register of Italy's Monumental Trees. A true rarity.
The favourite walk of Bolsena's residents
For those who live here, this is the walk above all others. You stroll at a leisurely pace, perhaps stopping on one of the benches to enjoy the cool shade. It is the natural route that leads from the old town directly to the lake's shores - perfect for an ice cream or an aperitif at sunset. Indeed, a daily ritual.
The avenue goes directly from Bolsena's historic centre, heading downhill to the lake.
