International Mountain Day

Overview

On 11 December, Italy celebrates International Mountain Day, a special occasion dedicated to highlighting one of the most extraordinary natural and cultural heritages of our country. From the Alps to the Dolomites, from the Apennines to the island mountain ranges, our peaks safeguard unique landscapes, ancient traditions, precious biodiversity and communities that live in harmony with nature. The event was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003, after declaring 2002 the International Year of Mountains (IMY).

This day invites travellers, outdoor enthusiasts and curious visitors to discover the richness of mountain environments through sustainable itineraries, perched villages, authentic flavours and immersive activities in every season. It is also a moment to reflect on the importance of protecting mountain ecosystems and on the vital role mountains play for the climate, water resources and the future of the planet.

Celebrations will take place on 11 and 12 December in the Belluno Dolomites, with a specific focus on the importance of glaciers, in line with the international year dedicated to their preservation proclaimed by the United Nations.

Taking part in International Mountain Day means choosing a mindful form of tourism that respects places and supports local communities.
