Conca di Bussari

Overview

Living the river to defend the environment

The Conca di Bussari and its water containment wall are part of the Fissero-Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante waterway. This navigable canal connects Mantua to the Adriatic Sea along a route approximately 135 kilometres long, passing through Rovigo, Mantua and Verona. The first project of the waterway, which went into operation in 2002, dates back to 1938, but over the years there have been several improvements.

Along the way, you will encounter the docks of Mantua, Ostiglia, Canda, Rovigo and, continuing with the navigation, you can reach Venice in an unusual and evocative way: the route connects to the Po-Brondolo navigable line, which will take you from the Chioggia lagoon to Lido.

If you prefer contact with nature, at the confluence of the Tione, near the scattered municipality of Gazzo Veronese, there is the Ostiglia Marshland nature reserve, straddling the border between Lombardy and Veneto. Classified as a wetland of national interest, the Venetian portion is known as the "Oasi Palude del Busatello" ("Busatello Marshland Oasis"). There are many reeds and aquatic plants, some of which are rare as they are not found elsewhere; you can also find carnivorous plants. The fauna is typical of rivers: rodents, several species of water birds, frogs, toads and newts, tortoises and 22 species of fish.
