Overview
Surrounded by a thousand-year-old forest, Tarvisio is a historic mountain village in Val Canale, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its location in a border area between Italy, Austria and Slovenia has made it a historical crossroads of languages and cultures over the centuries. In the historical centre, the 14th-century Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and the 18th-century Church of the Blessed Virgin of Loreto, located in Tarvisio Bassa, are worth a visit.
For an easy but exciting hike with the family, just a short walk from the village, we recommend the Slizza Gorge, an approximately 2 kilometre-long trail along the stream of the same name with footbridges, wooden bridges and tunnels. Between the Julian and Carnic Alps are natural places with wonderful landscape features such as Lake Predil and the Fusine Lakes. At Bagni di Lusnizza, we recommend a visit to the sulphur spring from the Rio del Solfo and the La Foresta Museum, where it is easy to come across deer, chamois, roe deer and ibex: ideal for children.
Renowned for winter skiing is the hamlet of Camporosso, equipped with several ski lifts. A half-hour drive away is the small village of Monte Santo di Lussari, famous for its ancient sanctuary dating back to 1360. The place of worship has been rebuilt several times over the centuries and restored to its original splendour with the latest restoration in 2000.
