Overview
Trieste's oldest settlement, Colle San Giusto is one of the Friuli capital's most charming districts, a small archaic treasure within a modern context. Walking through the streets of this district, it is hard not to be fascinated by the beauty of the monuments it has to offer. Starting with the ancient Roman Basilica: its remains, together with those of the Temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad, give an idea of the majesty that these two buildings possessed and tell a thousand-year history that bears witness to the ancient presence of man in the area.
The Castle of San Giusto, also of Roman origin, is a fortress that underwent destruction and reconstruction over the years, until the last intervention ordered by Frederick III of Habsburg in 1470, which gave the manor the appearance it still has today.
Finally, theBasilica of San Giusto is one of the most important and representative buildings in Trieste; with a squat bell tower built in 1343 by Randolfo de' Baiardi and an irregular façade adorned with a majestic rose window, this church is a true symbol of the city, so much so that it gives its name to the entire district.
