Cimolais

Overview

Set in a crown of Dolomite peaks and the seat and heart of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park, Cimolais has a very ancient history: dating back to the late Roman period, in 762 it was donated to the Abbey of Sesto al Reghena.

Situated652 metres above sea level, the village, gateway to the Cimoliana Valley,is a true paradise for hiking, trekking and mountaineering. The territory of Cimolais boasts the most beautiful peaks of the Friulian Dolomites, such as that of the Campanile di Val Montanaia, which soars into a 300-metre spire and was first climbed in 1902.

The village, built near the incredible ravine dug by the Cellina stream, has beautiful little streets and stone houses, witnesses of a simple rural world that has been able to keep an unspoilt environment intact: tens of kilometres of paths criss-cross a still untouched nature, devoid of human traces but rich in biodiversity.

In the village, in addition to the Park Visitor Centre, you should definitely visit the Parish Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its fine wooden altars from the 16th century, and the various alpine churches scattered throughout the area.
