Overview
The city of ceramics
An inland city of Romagna, Faenza is famous for its production of ceramics. First stop on your journey, therefore, can only be the MIC - Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, which houses a collection of exhibits from all over the world. But examples of this ancient art can be seen in every corner of the city. Keep your eyes peeled for the fine ceramic signs on the façades of houses and businesses.
The historical centre contains buildings of great architectural and cultural interest, such as the Pinacoteca Comunale di Faenza, which houses an exhibition of paintings from the Renaissance to the 20th century in Faenza. Also noteworthy are Palazzo Milzetti, the Masini Theatre and St Peter's Cathedral, with its rough brick façade reminiscent of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna. True focal points of city life are the adjacent Piazza del Popolo and Piazza della Libertà, overlooked by the 17th-century Clock Tower or Torre Civica.
Among the dishes to try are “Capricci”, pasta baked in the oven and stuffed with a filling of cooked ham, spinach and béchamel sauce. Also try the “Tortelli di San Lazzaro”, chestnut-filled sweets prepared every year on the fifth Sunday of Lent.
