Overview
Its founding date remains a mystery, as do some details of its history. What is certain is that the Church of Santa Chiara and its Monastery are some of the most striking sites in the city of Crotone. Greeted by the ancient-looking façade, spot the aedicule housing the statue of the saint. The bell tower with three 17th-century bells dominates the complex. Inside, pause to admire the paintings and the impressive organ.
On the right side of the church, a door opens to the ancient cloister of the monastery with its central well, which was initially mistaken for a crypt or an underground church. From the cloister, pass into the parlour, divided between the private area for the nuns, and the public area for the faithful, connected by the wheel used to exchange material goods.
