Overview
Against the backdrop of Rionero rises the ancient eruption cone of Mount Vulture, now covered in lush vegetation, vineyards and olive groves. We are in the land of Aglianico, a long-aging red wine, and of high quality olive oil. The town, stretching between two hills, has an ancient appearance, with the 18th-century Mother Church as its focal point.
Pleasant trips can be enjoyed in the natural surroundings, especially to the two Monticchio lakes, which are separated by a little isthmus and lie in the hollow of an ancient crater. Nearby, in a beautiful setting, is the Abbey of St Michael Archangel, a pilgrimage site. The mountain farms produce excellent Pecorino and Caciocavallo cheese.
