Abriola

Overview

The land of lovers

A little-known destination but full of surprises, the municipality of Abriola is located in Basilicata, in the province of Potenza, and has the appearance of a typical central Italian Apennine village. It is the ideal destination if you are looking for a slow pace and contact with nature. The village is famous for its artistic heritage, culinary delights and its connection to St Valentine, the patron saint of lovers.

Among the streets of the centre is the Madre di Santa Maria Maggiore Church, a 13th-century building that is definitely worth a visit: inside it are the relics of St Valentine and the stone door is a tribute to the life of the saint, minutely depicted on twenty tiles. Other works include a canvas painted in oil by the painter Giovanni De Gregorio, known as Pietrafesa.

Not far from Abriola is another important building: the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monforte, on the slopes of Mount Pierfaone, offers a suggestive view of the mountains and the village.

in the winter it is ideal for enjoying a holiday skiing in the Sellata-Arioso ski resort.
