Piccolomini Castle

Overview

In perfect condition, Piccolomini Castle of Celano was erected from 1392, and is surrounded by walls of the 14th and 15th centuries with five cylindrical towers. The keep, converted into a residence by the military leader condottiere Lionello Acclozamora in 1451, was completed after 1463 for Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II. The fortress houses the Marsica National Museum of Sacred Art, with paintings, sculptures and sacred vestments from the 6th to the 18th century, and an archaeological section displaying the Torlonia Collection, with ancient artefacts found during the draining of Lake Fucino in the second half of the 19th century.
