Susegana

Overview

Set in the pleasant surroundings of the Marca Trevigiana, Susegana is also worth a visit, if only to admire the scenery on the way there. The village is an expanse of dirt tracks and paths interspersed with bubbling streams, stone bridges and farmhouses scattered amid the vines and dense woodland. It has a small church, where you can see interesting 15th-century frescoes, and the view is dominated by the castle of St Saviour, standing proudly on the hilltop. The skyline might be familiar as it is featured in rural landscapes painted by the artist Cima da Conegliano. Once the historic residence of the counts of Collalto and today a private residence, open by appointment, the castle has been preserved intact with a double ring of walls, almost a fortress inside a fortress complete with crenellated towers, gardens, streams, a relais hotel and an educational farm. If you can't book in time, you can still admire the castle from the outside by following the trail that leads from Susegana to the top of the hill. Also from Susegana, another route passes near Collalto castle, of which, however, only one tower remains.
