Santo Spirito

Overview

Santo Spirito is the northernmost district of Bari, a city that has always had a close, intimate relationship with the sea. This district, like its capital, intersects its vicissitudes with those of the sea it overlooks: in fact, it is thought that its coast has always been used, since ancient times, as a port because of the ease with which boats can dock thanks to its conformation, and this hypothesis has been confirmed by the discovery, on a seabed not far from the bay, of the remains of a small Roman transport ship. The heart of the village was born on the sea, and there its most vital essence remains, in what were originally mostly fishermen's houses: it is in fact at the port and on the waterfront, called 'Marineria' by the inhabitants of the village, that the authenticity of this place emerges, its most intimate spirit, which smells of saltiness.
