San Marco La Catola

Overview

Perched at an altitude of more than 600 metres, San Marco La Catola is one of the highest villages in Apulia, nestled in a rich and verdant nature, with its woods, meadows, streams and paths. The historic centre of the village is characterised by the so-called 'c'nant', narrow, stepped downhill streets, while the oldest part of the village develops around what is called the castle but is actually the ducal palace. Particularly significant in the history of the village is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Josafat, located outside the town: here, in the early 20th century, Padre Pio, then a theology student, lived for a brief period.
