Overview
The design of the Aragonese layout was drawn up by Ciro Ciri with the collaboration of Francesco di Giorgio Martini from 1485 to 1498, at the request of Ferdinando I of Aragon. The new structure included the Swabian fortifications and improvements introduced by the Turks, who occupied the city for more than a year (1480). The structure is bordered by a moat and is pentagonal and irregular in shape, with three angular cylindrical towers, and a narrow bastion, reinforced with external ramparts in 1578, on which the coat of arms of Antonio De Mendoza and Don Pedro da Toledo can be seen, while the large coat of arms of Carlo V can be seen on the entrance door.
