Morciano di Leuca

Overview

Morciano di Leuca stands at the extreme tip of the Salento peninsula: a village whose ancient centre is dominated by the imposing castle, it has a history closely linked to the land and its production, so much so that, through the glass panes in the square, you can admire the hypogean oil mill and the grain pits. But the village's identity also encompasses that of the two hamlets of Barbarano del Capo and Torre Vado. Barbarano is a tiny rural village, known as Leuca Piccola because of the presence of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca, an exact reproduction of the Leuca basilica: the village was, and still is, a stopping place along the road that pilgrims take to Finibus Terrae. Torre Vado, on the other hand, takes its name from its 16th-century tower, which stands facing the sea and over the centuries has watched over the safety of its inhabitants.
