Maruggio

The historic heart of Maruggio, a village overlooking the splendid Ionian coast, is rich in traces and stories that have been handed down since ancient times. Clear signs of this past have remained in the architecture and works of art, such as the Church of Santa Maria del Tempio, or the Church of the Madonna del Verde, which, according to legend, was commissioned by the Knights of Malta together with that of San Giovanni. The beauty of the village, however, does not remain closed within its historic heart, but goes outside the town and takes on the reflections and enchantment of the surrounding nature: its crystal-clear sea and high sand dunes have been enhanced with the establishment of the Parco delle Dune di Campomarino, a site of community interest.
