Casalvecchio di Puglia

Overview

In the small centre of the northern Subappennino Dauno, it is still possible to breathe in the atmosphere linked to the culture, traditions and vocabulary that characterise its Greek-Albanian origins. Set on a hill, where cereal, olive and vine cultivation prevails, it is one of the 'linguistic islands' in the province of Foggia. Among the narrow streets of the historical centre are the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, inside which an oil painting depicting the Madonna of Carmel can be admired, and the Well of the Madonna whose water, according to legend, possessed miraculous properties. Nearby, buildings from the Middle Ages are preserved, such as the 'Torre dei briganti', a watchtower with a circular base, and the 'Casone della Sgurgola', a square tower with a characteristic crenellated crowning.
