Overview
Located along the route of the ancient Via delle Gallie, the consular Roman road built by Augustus to connect the Po Valley with Gaul, Settimo Vittore is a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin on the Canavese route of the Via Francigena.
Founded in the 9th century by Attone Anscario, the first Marquis of Ivrea, the castle was dismantled in the 16th century. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the remains of the medieval structure and the ruins of a tower were flanked by a new stately home, called "Castello Nuovo" ("new castle"), which over time took on the appearance of a residential villa.
In an elevated position above the town, the Pieve di San Lorenzo, together with the 9th-century octagonal baptistery of San Giovanni, appears to protect the village. Also worth a visit is the chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie church with its frescoes by painters working between 1100 and the end of 1400.
