Sacro Monte di Crea Special Reserve

Overview

Perched on one of the highest promontories of the Basso Monferrato, the Sacro Monte di Crea emerges in all its majesty. Sedimentary rocks, dating back to the Oligocene period, rim the hill and a strong landslide can be seen at the roadways. The steep and shady northern slope is dominated by dense vegetation consisting of field elm, cherry, hornbeam, oak, chestnut, curly maple and sycamore. The less sloping and more temperate southern slope, on the other hand, features a coppice of downy oak and manna ash. The construction of the basilica dedicated to the Rosary was commissioned to Costantino Massino in 1589. The initial plan was to build 15 chapels, but over time eight more were added, as well as five Romitories. Guglielmo Caccia (il Moncalvo), Giovanni and Nicola Wespin (i Tabachetti), G.B. della Rovere (il Fiamminghino), Giorgio Alberini, Veglia d'Asti and the Prestinari worked on decorating the chapels with sculptures and frescoes between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. After a period of neglect due to the Napoleonic suppressions, intensive restoration work was carried out in the 19th century. At the Park's headquarters, there is a multi-purpose hall, a library and green areas equipped for outdoor exercises.
Regional Law No 21 of 30.03.87 regulates visits inside the Park, and an administrative penalty may be imposed for violating it, which is why it is recommended to visit Sacro Monte on weekdays in order to avoid excessive crowding. If you belong to an organised group, guided tours are possible.
