Fenestrelle

Overview

Situated at an altitude of over a thousand metres, on both banks of the Chisone torrent, Fenestrelle is the ideal starting point for walks and hikes to discover the beautiful surrounding landscape, in particular towards the Assietta hill, Pra Catinat and Mount Albergian. The history of this village is linked to the presence in the area, from the 12th century, of a Waldensian community, which lived here until the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, a moment that marked the end of Protestants' freedom of worship. During this period, the Jesuit convent and the Church of San Luigi were built and, still linked to this policy of Catholicisation, the village fort was built: a jewel of military architecture, it was built to prevent Protestants from entering the valleys.
