Montecosaro

Overview

The village of Montecosaro rises on top of a hill and dominates, from its privileged position, the entire Chienti River valley. Its medieval roots can be admired in the 14th-century walls that still enclose the historic centre of the village, which can only be accessed by crossing Porta San Lorenzo. Among the buildings of artistic value in the village, the Romanesque basilica of Santa Maria a piè di Chienti, or Santissima Annunziata, which is located in Montecosaro Scalo and is one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture in the area, is definitely worth a visit. Inside, it contains fragments of precious frescoes of the period.
