Sefro

Overview

Nestling in the beautiful natural setting of the province of Macerata, washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Scarzito river, you will find the picturesque village of Sefro. It is the ideal starting point for a holiday in the great outdoors, cycling or walking through the forests of the Scurosa Valley.

The Montelago plateau covers an area of over four square kilometres and is one of the most interesting karst sites in the Marche region. Characterised by sinkholes and spring waters, the area is of great interest to geologists and potholers, who can explore the many caves and gorges found here. Studies of the area have traced the first settlements back to the Neolithic period. Over the centuries, the Scurosa Valley has seen the passage of various peoples, starting from the Phoenicians, who called the area "Sefer", to indicate the presence of iron deposits.

The most interesting historical site in the village is Torre Da Varano, a tower that represents the last remains of the castle owned by the lords of Camerino, who found refuge in Sefro following the sack of the nearby Ducal City in 1259. The history of the village is closely tied to rural traditions, which are well represented by the Farming and Folk Museum, housed in the old castle. The little village has a number of churches, including the Church of St Peter, St Albertine and the Chiesa dei Calcinari, with its 16th-century frescoes.
