Just a few kilometres from Recanati, in the hamlet of Montefiore, the castle stands on the road between Osimo and Montefano, in a location that still today reveals its original purpose. History The castle was built at the end of the 13th century as a defensive stronghold against Osimo, in an area that was already an important border region. During the 15th century, the castle was strengthened to adapt to new military techniques: the walls and the keep were reinforced, and a ravelin – an advanced structure to protect the entrance – was built. As the need for defence diminished, the castle changed function from the 17th century onwards and became a small inhabited village. Within the castle walls, there are houses, repurposed towers, and the Church of San Biagio. Over the centuries that followed, the complex retained this more everyday character, while still preserving its original layout. Listed as a national monument in 1921 and damaged during the Second World War, the castle still retains its authentic appearance today, which clearly reveals the different phases of its history.
What to see
Montefiore Castle still retains architectural features that clearly reveal its original purpose. The central tower dominates the entire complex and is a reminder of its role as a lookout point, while the elliptical city walls follow the natural contours of the land. The 15th-century fortified structures are still recognisable and tell the story of the transition to more advanced defensive systems.
The best spot to view it
As local residents know, the best way to appreciate the castle is to stop along the road that runs alongside it. You don't need to go inside to get a sense of its structure. From here, you can see the castle in its entirety and its relationship with the landscape, which is not just a backdrop but an integral part of its history.
