In the historic centre of Offida, one of the most distinctive towns in the Piceno area, you will find the Bobbin Lace Museum, which is dedicated to one of the region's most characteristic forms of craftsmanship. The museum is housed in Palazzo De Castellotti–Pagnanelli, a historic building that is the city's museum centre. Inside the palazzo, you can also visit the 'Guglielmo Allevi' Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Popular Traditions and the Municipal Art Gallery. As a result, the visit becomes a broader journey through different eras and forms of expression, from prehistory to contemporary art, and including the craft traditions that still form part of local life today.
Bobbin lace: a craft that spans the ages
Bobbin lace is a threadwork technique that has been passed down in Offida for centuries. Even today, as you stroll through the village's streets and squares, it is easy to come across lacemakers at work: sitting outdoors, they patiently weave threads on their bobbin laces, following traditional patterns and movements that have been passed down through the generations. The museum was established precisely to preserve and pass on this knowledge, taking visitors on a journey that tells the story of its development through tools, materials and personal accounts. Work tools, yarns, patterns and sample books are displayed alongside documents and photographs that offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the lacemakers and reveal the deep connection between this craft and local life. Alongside the oldest artefacts, there are also contemporary creations, reflecting a tradition that continues to evolve and interact with design and fashion.
Lace in contemporary fashion
One of the most intriguing pieces on display in the museum is a haute couture dress designed by the fashion designer Antonio Berardi and made by the lace makers of Offida. The dress was worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell at a fashion show in London in 1997 and is considered one of the icons of the meeting between traditional craftsmanship and international fashion.
