Overview
A small hamlet of the municipality of Madesimo in the province of Sondrio and a transit point alongside the cross-border route of the Via Spluga, Montespluga is the point of departure for many hiking destinations in the surrounding mountains: a handful of houses perched at 1908 m on the road rising from Chiavenna towards the Spluga Pass, it is mirrored in the artificial lake to which it lends its name. The enchanted scenery that encircles it provides thrills all year round. The white wintry valley makes way in spring to a lush green sea of flowers.
Since the opening of the San Bernardino tunnel, the pass is no longer open in winter, leaving the village cut off from both Italy and Switzerland.
