Rainer Kriester Sculpture Park

Overview

The Castellaro hill, in Vendone, less than 15 kilometres from Albenga, is the place where in the second half of the 20th century, the German painter and sculptor Reiner Kriester crafted a series of large works in limestone and marble, and had them placed outdoors. Some thirty impressive features, like stelae stretched towards the sky, form the Rainer Kriester's Sculpture Park and bears witness to the dry inspiration of the artist, who had previously, in his reclusive Berlin during the years of the Wall, had matured through more dramatic works and seems to have found a greater sense of peace in Liguria. In fact, the sculptor had stayed here often and for a long time since 1982, until he was welcomed by the small community of Vendone as an honorary citizen.
