Porticoes of Sottoripa

Overview

A porticoed street built in 1133 and used, subject to payment of a tax, for shops and sales stalls that still follow each other under its vaults, both in the first section (restored at the end of the 19th century), and in the last section that still retains the original low arches. In front of the porticoes is Piazza Caragamento: founded in 1839, it was originally used for the passage of wagons and later it was used by trains on the Turin-Genoa line that loaded and unloaded the goods from the port. In the twentieth century, the square became the main terminus of the entire tram and bus network. In 1992, with the transformation of the entire ancient port and the construction of the underpass between Via Gramsci and Piazza Cavour, it was pedestrianised. In 2023, redevelopment and embellishment work began, during which historical finds from the Middle Ages were uncovered, in particular ancient piers, a discovery that led to the temporary halt of the works.
