The Paths and Stories Museum in Vicovaro: Voices of the Elders in the Monti Lucretili region
The MU.Vi.S (Museo delle Vie e Storie) is located in Vicovaro, inside the former Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Our Lady of Grace). The museum looks at the intangible cultural heritage, or the collective memory, of the area. There are no display cases or objects lined up one after another, only sofas to sit on and audio and video projections telling the stories of the elderly people who lived in the villages of the Monti Lucretili.
Ancient paths, the voices of those who walked them
The common thread is the ancient paths now covered by the trail network of the Monti Lucretili Natural Park. The museum tells their story through the people who walked along them: the wet nurse, the old farmer, the shepherd. Scenic projections offer flashbacks of the experiences of entire generations, word by word. Memories, legends, traditions.
Collective memory
The past comes to life through the multimedia possibilities of the present. The MU.Vi.S allows the visitor to participate directly in the rediscovery of the past. Through oral tradition, it offers a historical reading of the territory and of people’s connections with the fascinating landscape of the Monti Lucretili Natural Park.
