Church of Our Lady of Sorrows

Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Vico nel Lazio: the 19th-century building and the wooden Madonna

The Church of the Madonna Addolorata, also known as the Church of St Martin, has been documented since 1150, although its stylistic features date back further, to the 10th-11th century. The portal features a monolithic lintel surmounted by a stone block arch, likely built using Roman spolia (reused elements). The building seen today, however, was almost entirely rebuilt between 1887 and 1895 by the engineer Giulio Pitocchi, who replaced the existing medieval three-aisled structure.

What to see inside

The high altar is in Neoclassical style, with a wooden altarpiece structure from 1897 housing a plaster Madonna Addolorata (Sorrowful Mother) from 1942. On the floor is a sepulchral slab dated 1611. The oldest piece is located in a niche on the left: a wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child from the School of Benedetto Antelami. It dates back to the late 12th or early 13th century, and still bears traces of its original polychromy. The church served as a Benedictine parish until 1750. Since 1857, it has been the seat of the Confraternita dell'Orazione e Morte (Confraternity of Prayer and Death).
