Caetani Castle

Caetani Castle in Trevi nel Lazio: the medieval fortress overlooking the Aniene Valley

Castello Caetani is located at the highest point of Trevi nel Lazio, perched on a limestone outcrop. With walls up to 16 metres high, a surface area of 800 square metres, and a square-based central keep offering views over the entire upper Aniene Valley, its origins likely date back to around the year 1000, although no documents confirm this with certainty.

The structure

The complex is divided into three distinct zones. The north-western part was reserved for the lord's residence (noble quarters), with refined rooms designed for living. The south-eastern section served a military and defensive purpose. At the centre stands the keep (maschio), the square tower that remains the most recognisable element of the village’s skyline.

From the Caetani to modern restoration

The Caetani family, from whom the castle takes its name, held it for nearly two centuries, starting from 1299, and oversaw its expansion. After their expulsion in 1471, the castle's function changed several times, until it was eventually incorporated into the village’s dwellings. The 1915 earthquake accelerated its decay. Restoration work began in 1984, and now visitors are once again able to visit it.
