Tiber Island

Overview

Urban island on the Tiber

It is 300 meters long and 90 meters wide and it is the smallest inhabited island in the world, originating from volcanic rocks and accumulated fluvial deposits.

Also named "inter duos pontes” because it is connected to the city by two bridges that make it easy to cross the Tiber: towards Trastevere from the Cestio bridge and in the direction of the Ghetto by the Fabricio bridge. Tiber Island has gone through different phases and stories, made of sacredness, legends and myths.

Its sacred function is thanks to the building of the Roman temple of Aesculapius, god of Medicine, on whose remains was then built the church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola.

Today, its function of "welcoming" is evident thanks to the hospital "Fatebenefratelli", founded in 1584 and still active, alongside the Israelite hospital.

In the summer the island changes and turns into an open-air cinema, becoming one of the traditional Roman Summer events.
