Church of St Mary of the Assumption in Piedimonte San Germano: the red façade and a surprising crucifix
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta overlooks Piazza Municipio in Piedimonte San Germano, in the province of Frosinone. It is a modern building, rebuilt after the Second World War bombings that levelled much of the town. It is instantly recognisable from its red plastered façade, an unusual colour for a church in the Cassino area.
A modern church
The bell tower stands alongside the façade on the left, and at the center a large rose window with stained glass bears the M for Maria. Above it, a decorated pediment closes the composition. The architecture is modern, essential, with no frills.
Inside, light and little else
The interior is a single bright open space. There are no side aisles, no chapels. Stained glass windows filter light from every side. The eye-catching element is the crucifix suspended above the apse, with a large decorative piece behind it.
