Scauri Tower: the watchtower on Monte d'Oro
Standing on Monte d'Oro, overlooking the sea of Scauri, is a 14-meter-high truncated-pyramidal tower. It was built between 1563 and 1590 by the Viceroys of the Kingdom of Naples to defend the coast against Barbary raids. The garrison was equipped with horses for couriers, which is believed to account for the origin of the name "Torre dei Cavallari" (Tower of the Horsemen).
A defensive system now in ruins
The tower was part of a sighting network that included the Gianola Tower, the Fico Tower, and the Foce Tower. The first two are now largely in ruins or have disappeared. Scauri Tower has survived, though it lacks a roof and remains in poor condition. It later served as a customs post under state ownership until the 20th century. In recent years there have been several proposals to restore and enhance it.
How to get there
A 600-metre path with a 50-metre elevation gain starts from Via della Cartiera, making it suitable for families. From the summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aurunci Mountains.
