Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Due to its hilltop position perched on the Lepini mountains, Prossedi is surrounded by the numerous springs and age-old trees scattered throughout the territory. Cross the scenic Porta Maggiore, a gateway surmounted by a public clock, and enter the historic centre, packed with monuments such as the Church of Sant’Agata, the Romanesque Church of San Nicola, featuring a splendid 14-century portal, and the Baronial Palace, now privately owned. Not far from the centre, the Fountain of the Popes was built in 1727. For trekking enthusiasts, we recommend the path leading to the Prossedi plateau and the one that reaches the cave known as “Grotta degli Ausi”. The area is also crossed by two pilgrims' ways, the southern Via Francigena and the Cammino della Regina Camilla. Sausages (the local speciality being the zazzicchia), cheese, extra-virgin olive oil, snails and pomegranate jams are among the typical products of Prossedi. Particularly noteworthy amongst its most significant events are “Vicoli di notte” (Alleyways by Night) on the Saturday after the Day of the Assumption (a popular festivity that falls on the 15th of August), the Sagra della Zazzicchia Prossedana (Zazzicchia Festival) in December, and the Feast Day of Saint Agatha, the town’s patron saint, in July.
